Self-worth — the foundation of all your relationships

Self-worth isn't about believing you're better than others. It's about believing you're good enough — exactly as you are.

It sounds simple. For many people, it's the hardest work they'll ever do.

What is self-worth?

Self-worth is your fundamental sense of your own value. It's the answer to the question: "Am I okay?"

Not: "Am I successful?" Not: "Do people like me?" But: "Am I fundamentally okay as a person?"

Self-worth isn't the same as self-confidence

Self-confidence is about what you can do. Self-worth is about who you are.

You can have high self-confidence — be skilled and successful — and still have low self-worth. Many high-achieving people know that combination.

Where does low self-worth come from?

It forms early. Critical parents. Bullying. Abandonment. Early experiences of your needs not being welcome.

These experiences create an inner voice that says: "You're not good enough." "You're too much." "You don't deserve love."

Self-worth and relationships

Your self-worth sets the standard for how you let others treat you.

With low self-worth, you accept treatment you shouldn't accept. You don't set boundaries because you don't feel you have the right to them. You give more than you receive because you don't believe you're loved for who you are.

With healthy self-worth, you can love without losing yourself. You can set boundaries without guilt. You can receive love without pushing it away.

Self-worth can be built

It isn't static. It can grow.

By treating yourself with the same care you give others. By feeling your emotions instead of suppressing them. By setting boundaries — even when it's hard. By celebrating your successes instead of only seeing your failures.

It's daily work. It's the most important work you can do.
